New Music // LaFaro – ‘Easy Meat’
It’s just a smidge over a year since I reviewed LaFaro‘s self-titled debut record for State, so it’s a bit surprising (but welcome) to see the Belfast quartet have already lined up the second chapter for release.
I found the debut brilliant at times but frustratingly inconsistent. ‘Easy Meat,’ the lead single from the album of the same name, is more the latter than the former – it’s aggressive and metallic with a hint of Devin Townsend, but it doesn’t really slay like a ‘Tupenny Nudger’ or a ‘Girl is a Drummer.’ As is often the case with prolific bands (Oasis, the Wildhearts, the Jam), the b-side is at least as good as the single: ‘Wee Buns’ is slower and more deliberate but with offers much more to hold onto with heavy metal fist-pumps and guitar harmonies abounding.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to Easy Meat in full yet, but with a monster 18 tracks (including interludes) on show it promises to be a much different beast to the pithy LaFaro.
