Launch Gig // Retarded Cop w/ Groom, Fag Enablerz

I caught Retarded Cop for the first time (a 50% shot considering it was only their second gig) on the State vs. Golden Plec shindig in the Mercantile last month and was blown away. Tonight they launch their debut album, You Have the Right to Remain Retarded, at the Workman’s Club with support from Groom and Fag Enablerz (Admission: €15 with a copy of the CD or €10 without).

I was a little ambivalent about the band (essentially the brainchild of Moutpiece frontman Gaz Le Rock) up until then, having seen a couple of tracks on Youtube that were catchy without really being that memorable. I went along to the gig with muted expectations and was pleasantly surprised to find the material translate far better on first listen than I’d have expected. The five-piece band rattled off more or less the entire album, from the only slightly dated ‘Charlie Sheen’ to the frenetic musing on a cash-light night in, ‘Tea & Fags.’

I’ve been jamming on the album for the past week or so and, even though a lot of the tracks rely on that mile-a-minute Buzzcocks-style melodic patter, they shake it up enough to keep it interesting the whole way through. My favourite is the slightly more relaxed ‘Totes Devotes,’ which boasts a melody so catchy it’ll stick to yer ears like a particularly sticky earwig. And at 5 minutes, you can’t really complain you’re not getting value for your euro. I can’t embed it here because the stream is private, but you can listen to the full album over at Nialler9.
