New Music // Jape – ‘Hands of Fire’ / ‘Lying on a Deathbed’
I’ve always been slightly ambivalent about Jape/Richie Egan.
A fan of his from the early Redneck Manifesto days, I was impressed that he’d take such a radically different direction for his solo material. However I always felt that, while he was an artist who was capable of producing great individual tracks (‘Floating’ and ‘Phil Lynott’ are particularly favourites), but he never really bore that quality out over the course of an album. Clearly many others disagree, and his Choice Music Prize win in 2008 was, I think, the only occasion when the eventual winner of that prize was never seriously in doubt.
Jape will release his fourth full-length record, Ocean of Frequency, in September on new label Music is for Losers. He’s made the first double A-sided single available for free download, with the small stipulation that you provide an email address to keep you updated on future developments. The two tracks provide a nice counterpart to one another, from the busy funk-electronica of ‘Hands of Fire’ to the Conor O’Brien-assisted folk acoustic nostalgia trip of ‘Lying on a Deathbed,’ and bode well for the album later in the year.
