Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed

Ahhh, sandwiches!

Ed Power, vol. 2

with 3 comments

I wrote this extremely even-handed blog post on Ed Power a month or so ago because it was the sort of myopic begrudging shite that Irish journalists (and Irish people in general) tend to come up with when they start to feel they’re too good for our tiny island.

In the spirit of consistency, I should probably utilise this space to point out when he does things right as well. Here’s a nice little feature he contributed to the Telegraph highlighting five of the better new acts on the Irish scene, including the very established Villagers and Adebisi Shank alongside newer faces like Babybeef and Solar Bears, who I’ve recently cottoned onto myself.

Still, I am really at a loss for how he came to this description of the wonderful (and 100% free) Cast of Cheers:

an engaging Ben Folds-fronts-Weezer blueprint

Maybe he used the same pair of mangled ears that led him to write two completely different reviews of last month’s Gorillaz gig in the O2… (credit to commenter Mike).

  1. Funnily enough, wasn’t Ed the one who wrote a negative review of Adebisi Shank’s second album for the Metro under the nom de plume Eamonn de Paur?

  2. I can’t believe you don’t get that Ben Folds-meet-Weezer thing. Soooooo obvious, loike…

  3. I was wondering about the Eamon de Paor thing – I figure it must be him. Funny story: I went to school with a girl named de Paor whose name literally translated to “Flower Power”.

I suppose the Ben Folds/Weezer thing makes sense when you consider one of the members has glasses. Can’t believe I didn’t figure it out sooner.
