Too Famous To Get Fully Dressed

Converge // Free live album

For those unfortunate enough to have missed it, US metalcore legends Converge rolled into town back in July, performing to a packed-out Whelan’s with a stellar line-up of Kylesa, Gaza and Norway’s Kvertelak in tow (check out my State cohort’s review here).

It was a great show – with the minor exception of tepid openers Kvertelak and some sound issues that ran through Kylesa’s set – and you should be ashamed of yourselves for having missed it. Don’t worry though – I’ve got you covered.

As part of their just-launched DW Live series, Deathwish Inc. (co-owned by Converge frontman Jacob Bannon) are giving away a bootleg of the band’s 2005 performance in Minneapolis in support of then-current album You Fail Me. The bootleg had previously circulated with the wrong tracklist, so it’s kind of cool to have a legitimised version up for legal download.

Being a bootleg, the sound is a bit dodge, particularly on opening numbers ‘Eagles Become Vultures’ and ‘The Broken Vow,’ but bear in mind that it is a hardcore show and precision isn’t necessarily the aim.

Interesting fact: Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou has a degree in biomedical engineering and runs his own studio in his hometown of Salem, Massachussetts, the scene of the infamous witch trials. No wonder hometown heroes BATS chose him to produce their first record.
